Perma-Culture = Permanent Agriculture

I have taken an interest in Permaculture. It happened slowly. First it was a share with a Community Sponsored Agriculture(CSA). Then I wanted to eat healthier. I try to buy local food. Now I see a system that is sustainable and healthy.

I have edible food plants at my biz and harvesting berries around my house. I am sampling the concept. I am kinda into Permaculture.

I follow a group on Facebook[link ], Google+(Circle and a spark)[email: permacultureideas@gmail.com], and Twitter[@MotherEarthNews ]. The local nature center(Riveredge)[ link ] has a sample plot. I am sharing some fields with A CSA(Wellspring)[ link ]. I interact with a local master gardener regularly[ link ]. I have gotten plants locally.

I watched part of a video course on-line. It was discussing ethic and the environment. It got me thinking:

The current agricultural system is not sustainable. Food I plant/harvest/buy locally is much tastier/healthier. I feel the current system of food delivery is too dependent on systems out of my control. The grocery store food chain is dependent on deliveries every three days. Regular grocery store food is not as healthy.

I want to support healthy agriculture. I want the land to receive nutrient, have the topsoil protected, and grow food. I want to take an active roll in my food chain.

Goals (Work in Progress)

Improve my land stewardship.
Purchase 10% locally.
Decrease dependency on large corporations.
Get healthier.

My wife and I took a mini-vacation to Door County last week. It was fun, relaxing, and not very crowded. In hindsight, this was amazing because it overlapped Memorial Day Weekend. Yes, I have great pictures that I should post.

Memorial Day is to honor all our war dead in the US. It spans all our wars. Growing up, I remember the guys from Vietnam all too well. They were not allowed to stand with the vets from Korea, WWI, and WWII. They were prone to crying and fits of anger. Today I will say a little prayer not only for all those that have passed, but also those that are especially struggling today.

I love Mexican Breakfast at El Tapatio de Jalisco in West Bend, WI. They open up at 7 am on Fridays and Saturdays. They also serve breakfast at 9 am the other days of the week.

I have eaten every item on the Mexican food side of the menu. My son loves the pancakes. My wife loves the chorizo and eggs. My wife and I go for breakfast at least once a week.

I am told they have a killer "make your own" lunch combo, but work keeps me away from West Bend for lunch.

Epson Stylus NX415 is the worst printer I have ever sold. One was blurry print out of the box, the replacement refuses to accept brand new Epson ink cartridges. DON'T BUY. What are some better all in ones that are good? Suggestions?

OS X Dictionary, Google Search, and Text to Speech

Kurzweil 3000 has some great products. I have a customer that utilizes them to master difficult(extremely complex) topics in a short order. This customer switch to OS X last fall and had the Parallels Desktop installed. One of the guys installed a interface for Dragon Dictate OS X app. Worked better than on Windows.

Now on Friday came the wish for the Kurzweil 3000 on the Mac. I buckled and suggested using the built in apps from OS X. I had no problem with the Text to Speech. I turned it on in System Preferences>Speech>TexttoSpeech I set the hot key for control + V

Then came the request for dictionary definitions. I suggested we add a google search too. The solution is built into OS X. Double Click the word, right click(control click), select "Look up in Dictionary" or "Search on Google"

Bonus Solutions

In Cocoa Apps > Double Click Word > control+command+D

Install DictionarySearch 3.0
Restart Firefox
Go Tools>Add-ons>DictionarySearch 3.0
Preferences Button
Change the Dictionary 1 text to "OS X Dictionary Search"

"People and sturgeons are colliding," Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission official Karen Parker said.

Sturgeon, which is one of the oldest genera of fish in existence, have been leaping out of the water without warning and striking people.

"If it hits you, it is like being hit with a brick," boater Karen Parker said.

Within the last 24 months, wildlife experts have documented more than 12 random strikes within a 40-mile stretch from the Suwannee to Manatee Springs.

Allie Katrick, 14, of Brevard County, Fla., was recently on a jet ski with her friend Kori Snitker, when a sturgeon leaped in front of them. The sturgeon's thick armor-like skin sliced into her knee, requiring stitches.

The teens said they had a close call with a 200-pound sturgeon the day before the injury in an area where the fish were not expected to be.

"Even the locals were commenting they had not seen sturgeon that far north," a witness said.

"It's pretty random," Parker said. "I can't tell you where the next sturgeon is going to jump as you can attest to."
